I don’t know about you, but watching Andy Murray turns me into a nervous wreck. A glass of Pimms is not going to be enough to get me through the tennis tomorrow. So I present you with this as an alternative. It’s made of strawberries and gin and it’s called a smash, what could be more appropriate for Wimbledon?
The principles of a smash are the same as an Old Fashioned, muddle a sugar cube with some juice or bitters and add your alcohol of choice, along with plenty of ice. So for this tennis themed version, squeeze half a lemon over a sugar cube and smash together, then add two diced strawberries and do a bit more smashing.
Add lots of ice then pour over a good shot of gin and stir briefly. Done. Decorate with another strawberry if you’re feeling fancy (I was). It’s quite a strong drink to start off with but softens as the ice melts and you get some delightfully alcoholic lumps of strawberry at the end.
This is a very flexible recipe, you can add herbs, mint, or basil if you’re feeling adventurous, at the initial smashing stage. A drizzle of elderflower cordial or liqueur at the end would also go nicely if your gin is not too fragrant. If you fancy a longer drink, top up with soda water. Just don’t be the wag that shouts c’mon Tim. It’s not funny.
