Chrismapoliton

I didn’t get a photo of this in situ, this was all that was left the morning after, but I bring this concoction out every year and it deserves a mention. It’s a festive mix of ginger wine, cranberry juice and vodka and perfect for making in vast quantities for a crowd. Continue reading

Cracking whiskey sours

After the sugary excesses of the Easter weekend, something a bit less sweet is in order. Whiskey sours seem to fit that bill exactly. The variations of this cocktail are many – in particular, whether or not you include egg white or bitters and quite how sour the whole thing should be. So I’ve done some experimenting on your behalf (hic!) and here are my thoughts. Continue reading

Please look after this bear: A marmalade cocktail

The eye-twitchingly sharp Seville oranges that go into marmalade are still just about in season, if you fancy having a go at making your own. I have an excellent supplier, who produces stuff Paddington would be proud to put in his sandwiches. It’s brilliant in this eye-opener of a cocktail, a Hawksmoor special, which is also known as a breakfast martini. Although, if you’re going to have one for breakfast, I wouldn’t plan too much for the rest of the day. Continue reading

Strawberry gin smash

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI don’t know about you, but watching Andy Murray turns me into a nervous wreck. A glass of Pimms is not going to be enough to get me through the tennis tomorrow. So I present you with this as an alternative. It’s made of strawberries and gin and it’s called a smash, what could be more appropriate for Wimbledon? Continue reading

Gimlet-eyed

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I always thought a cocktail had to have three ingredients. A gimlet only has the two but after getting merrily sloshed on these during happy hour in a bar in New York I’m pretty sure they count as a cocktail. This one’s named after a Royal Navy ship’s surgeon Sir Thomas Gimlette (at least that’s the story I like best) and is designed to keep scurvy at bay.

NW Negronis

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Invented in Florence and named after an aristocrat, Count Camillo Negroni no less, this is definitely my cocktail of the moment. Equal parts gin, Campari and Martini Rosso, stirred over lots of ice and served with an orange twist. They’re bittersweet and strong but so red and very, very moreish. Not to everyone’s taste perhaps but if you like gin or Campari, worth a go.

Well, nobody’s perfect

I couldn’t help but notice that the most popular thing I’ve written is about Old Fashioneds. Turns out everyone likes a stiff drink. In my continuing quest to have a grown up alcohol selection I am aiming for the ingredients for a Negroni but a handy halfway house is another bourbon based cocktail, the deliciously prohibition era Manhattan. They’re what Marilyn Monroe mixes in a hot water bottle in Some Like it Hot, and if that isn’t an endorsement I don’t know what is. Continue reading
